Planning application submitted for major hotel development in Manchester
Acting on behalf of S Harrison, Turley has submitted a planning application to create a new hotel development on Great Ancoats Street, in the New Islington area of Manchester city centre.
Earlier this summer, S Harrison announced it had agreed terms with international hotel operator Meininger, which plans to open its first hotel in the north of England on the site.
We are providing expert Planning, Strategic Communications, Heritage and Townscape and Sustainability services for the 12 storey, 212-bedroom hybrid hotel scheme, which subject to planning being approved, will open by January 2022 and will create more than 20 full time jobs. It will offer 785 beds in total, in a mix of rooms including classic doubles, private multiple-bed rooms and dormitories.
A key player in the hybrid hotel market, all Meininger hotels have their own individual style and offer flexible and affordable modern accommodation alongside a reception, lobby, lounge, breakfast room and bar as well as a guest kitchen and games zone. The Manchester hotel will also have a taxi drop off area, disabled parking and secure cycle store.
S Harrison’s managing director, Ann Scott, said:
“As well as bringing a leading hotel operator to Manchester, this development will complement all the regeneration work that has taken place in recent years in this popular part of the city, which is just a 10-minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly station.
“We’ve used our vast experience working in the hotel and leisure sector to create this opportunity, bring the scheme forward and submit a planning application for our first Manchester development. We’re now already looking for further opportunities in the North West.”
The Great Ancoats Street site previously housed two retail warehouses and car parking. Prior to that it was the home of Caledon Cotton Mill in the 1800s.
The development has been designed by 3D Reid, the architects behind several other hotel schemes in the city, including the Principal, Indigo and Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert hotels.
S Harrison has an enviable track record for delivering high quality hotel schemes. Last year the company completed a 46-bedroom Hotel du Vin in Stratford and an award winning 127-bedroom Travelodge in Lincoln. It is currently transforming two Grade A listed classic Georgian town houses, known as Buchan House, in Edinburgh’s New Town into a prestigious 72 en suite bedroom Malmaison hotel.
German owned Meininger has 26 European hotels in 15 cities. It opened its first UK hotel in London Hyde Park in 2006.
