Transformative regeneration in Shrewsbury town centre

Our role

  • Supporting Shropshire Council and their development partner RivingtonHark, we provided built Heritage advice for the Smithfield Riverside project in Shrewsbury, an ambitious regeneration project set to transform the area between the River Severn and the Darwin Centre in Shrewsbury town centre.
  • Our Heritage team provided expert advice and assessments on heritage considerations to inform and support the project vision that both celebrates and respects Shrewsbury’s historic character.
  • The first phase of the project, which capitalised on Levelling Up funds secured from UK Government, was approved in 2024 with work well underway.
  • Following this, we supported the second phase of development for three key plots between Smithfield Road, Raven Meadows and the public park. This phase established key recommendations for the design, scale, and use of future buildings, guiding the long-term development of the area.

Results

  • The development will introduce a mixed-use space, including new offices, homes and commercial units, creating a dynamic environment for residents and visitors. A landmark park near Roushill will serve as a green public space, enhancing biodiversity while offering a recreational area for the community.
  • In addition to infrastructure improvements, Smithfield Riverside is expected to provide a significant boost to economic growth, attracting jobs, investment and visitors to Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire region.
  • The first phase of the project was approved in March 2024. The second phase, which includes an outline planning application for further development, was approved in April 2025.
